"I write poems on walls that crumble and fall
I talk to shadows that sleep and go away crying.”

Barrio Viejo

Viejo barrio, barrio viejo.
Solo hay lugares parejos.
Donde un dia hubo casas,
Donde vivió nuestra raza.

Solo quedan los escombros,
De los hogares felizes,
De las alegres familias,
De esa gente que yo quise.

Por las tardes se sentaban
Afuera a tomar el fresco.
Yo pasaba y saludaba.
Ya parece que oigo el eco.

Cómo esta Doña Juanita?
Buenas tardes, Isabel.
Ahora que dices Chalita.
Cómo está Arturo y Manuel?

Viejo barrio, barrio viejo,
Que en mi infancia te gozé.
Y con todos mis amigos,
Iba descalzo y a pie.

De la Meyer hasta el Ocho,
Desde el Ocho hasta la acequia
De la acequia hasta el rio;
Ese era el mundo mio.

Dicen que éramos pobres,
Pues yo nunca lo noté.
Yo era feliz en mi mundo,
De aquel barrio que adoré.

Bonitas las serenatas,
A las tres de la mañana,
Que le cantaba a mi chata,
Pegadito a su ventana.

Por la calle del convento,
La casa destruida,
Quedó como monumento
Al gran amor de mi vida.

Pobrecito viejo barrio.
Como te debe doler,
Cuando en nombre del progreso,
Te tumban otra pared.

Viejo barrio, barrio viejo.
Yo tambien ya enviejesí.
Y cuando uno se hace viejo,
Nadie se acuerda de ti.

Vámonos muriendo juntos.
Que me entierren en tu suelo.
Y seremos los difuntos,
Rodeados de mil recuerdos.

Gomez-Pena and La Pocha Nostra

Gomez-Pena and La Pocha Nostra invites all friends to check out the following digital arts project. It is truly amazing.

ABOUT THE PROJECT:
The site is the visual culmination of a month-long collaborative project. During October, 2008, performance artist Guillermo Gómez-Peña, photographer RJ Muna, curator Chuck Mobley and several members of La Pocha Nostra including Emma  Tramposch, Violeta Luna and Roberto Sifuentes, researched the borders between performance and photography at SFCamerawork Gallery (www.sfcamerawork.org) in a series of performative photo shoots involving audience members and invited guests from the San Francisco community. La Pocha Nostra provided a collection of costumes, wigs, hats, shoes and artifacts along with a crew of trans-cultural stylists to assist the audience in trying out different looks. After each event the photographic set and props remained on site with a selection of images projected on the backdrop. Over the month, the mis’en scene was altered by the artists. Ultimately, the accumulative nature of each event created a layered “theater of absence” that remained in the gallery for the exhibition’s duration. The result was an amazing photo-portfolio contained in this website designed by web-mistress extraordinaire: Suzanne Stefanac.
