Superstition
July 31, 2008
The tree moth in the garage was an omen,
so I killed the messenger:
pulled off its velvet wings
and chewed them with a spiteful mouth.
A delicate crunch of the veins
and I heard nothing else.
My tongue grew thick with their moss.
I swallowed its wisdom with a vengeful mouth
and tasted my own fear.

Is this the Rebecca Gonzales who wrote Slow Work To The Rhythm Of Cicadas?
The bio of Gonzales in the back of the After Aztlan anthology (copyright 1992) says she is the author of Flesh and Blood. It’s likely it’s the same Gonzales; Flesh and Blood and Slow Work To The Rhythm Of Cicadas were both published by Prickly Pear Press.
