Lydia Mendoza was a pioneering Tejana vocalist and multi-instrumentalist of the 1920s and ’30s who transcended borders and became an international star. Mendoza passed away in 2007.

I just want to add a side note about Les Blank and Chris Strachwitz’s documentary Chulas Fronteras. I just saw it for the first time this Spring when Juan Tejeda put together a day-long film screening on Tejano-Conjunto music for the Conjunto Festival. It’s a beautiful film. I wish more people had come out to see it, even if they had already seen it before. There’s some beautiful footage of Lydia Mendoza in it.
